August, 31 2005.
Dear friends, I arrived in Rio at exactly 11:28am (local time). As soon as I arrived I met aunt Irene. Little Nicholas and uncle Julio are not here at the moment. Uncle Julio is at work and Nicholas is at his grandma's home today. Aunt Irene said he'll sleep there tonight and will return only tomorrow. When I got out of my traveling box, I first saw Lully. She seemed to be very curious about me. Then, I got really scared... aunt Irene has two cats in her family too!!! No one told me that before. When Cleo and Sophie approached, I tried to hide into my traveling box again, but aunt Irene told me not to be scared because they are very friendly cats. Uff!!! I was so relieved. I'm sure we will all get along very well. Aunt Irene has just taken a few pictures of me. I promise to write on my diary often, so all my friends can read about what I'm doing in Rio. :o)
Hope you all come back soon!
Love, Elliot

Below you can see the southern part of the city where most of the beaches are concentrated. It is also where the Sugar Loaf and the Corcovado are located. This is the touristic part of the city and where I will be often visiting many beautiful places. Can't wait to start my city tour with little Nicholas, aunt Irene and aunt Lu, who offered to drive us to some of the places we want to go.

Elliot: Finally in Rio after a long 9-day journey from California! Let me get out of this traveling box and ring the bell. Can't wait to meet everyone. Ding Dong! Helloooooo!!!!! Anybody home?

Elliot: Hi there Lully, nice to meet you. My name is Elliot and I'm a cute little mouse who is on a worldwide journey. I will spend some time here with you and your family. Hey, watch out! That tickles. Hey, this straw hat is mine, don't bite it...let go, let go. I promise to let you use it later. Let me just unpack everything first. Can't wait to get out of here and rest a little bit. Your mommy is preparing me something to eat and drink. I'm starving!

Lully: Mommy, can you tell me what is this mouse doing here? Hope he won't eat my food. I won't share anything...I'm telling you!

Sophie: Hi there little one! Who are you? Are you a mouse? Purrrrr..... Cleo!!
Elliot: Oh, no! Somebody help me, please! Aunt Irene, where are you!!!! Stop taking pictures and get me outta here!

 Elliot: Ni-ni-ce ki-ki-ki-ki-tty, please do-do-don't eat me...ple-ple-ple-please!!!

Elliot: Ok, ok. Aunt Irene told me that Sophie and Cleo are friendly, but... a little precaution is always good, so...let me hide here for a while.
Oh, no, I haven't taken a plane to the Amazon, this is not the Amazon rain forest. Aunt Irene has really lots of plants at home. All so beautiful.

Elliot: Aunt Irene, what's the season here after all? I thought it was Winter, but the clock shows 37ºC/98.6ºF. Is this right??? Let me take this jacket off before I melt.
Irene:
Yes, Elliot. That's right. We're having the warmest days in Rio this winter since 5 years ago, that's what I heard on the news. Yesterday it was even warmer. Don't worry about Sophie and Cleo, you can get out of there now and sit on the couch. I'll be back soon! Just feel yourself at home.

Elliot: No way! If she thinks I'll get out of here she is really mistaken. I'll stay here until she's back. Oh, that's great, a place in the shadow to relax... I'm so-OOOhhhh sleepy now... think I'm going to.... zzzzz.....zzzzzzz

Irene: Hey Elliot, where are you? Here is your coffee. I'll bring you some cookies too.

Elliot: Hmmm, that smells good. Thanks aunt Irene! I've heard somewhere that Brazilian coffee is served in a small cup like this, that's why Brazilians call it "cafezinho", which is the diminutive word for "café" (coffee in Portuguese), right?. I've also heard that Brazilians drink it all the time. In the morning, between the meals, when meeting friends... that's interesting. I'll certainly learn many things during this trip. Now, I'll taste this genuine Brazilian coffee....hmmm....great!

Elliot: Bed time for me now. I think Nicholas won't mind me using his crib while he's not here. I'm so tired. Need to take some time to rest before meeting the rest of the family and aunt Lu. Aunt Irene said they will take me to many beautiful places in Rio. Use the links at the bottom of this page to see other entries in my diary. See you later! Zzzzzzzzz.....
